General Fishing Report for April 4, 2022

Conditions on local rivers are slowly improving, but it is very day to day, and sometimes hour by hour.  River temps are ranging from 40 to the mid 40's depending upon recent precipitation and air temperatures.  Until we get some more consistent warmer air temps, look for specific bite windows.  I have had some recent success after rain events, but also coinciding with nighttime temps that stay in the 40's. This scenario bumps water temps up just enough this time of year to get the fish feeding. It does look like a more significant rain event later this week, so again conditions are going to be day to day.  The official VT trout season opens this Saturday, so expect to see a few more anglers out on the water.  I've been out a couple times each week for the last month, but haven't seen many other anglers taking advantage of VT's new catch and release regulations. 

I've been finding myself fishing mostly stained water recently, so my fly selection and flies that are working haven been slim.  Mostly been using junk flies, with larger stones (Pats) and mops getting the eats. Eggs and sucker spawn patterns should be getting some looks too.  Been finding feeding fish in current, but with a good break, either a seam or a drop off.  Fish will begin to spread out as flows dictate and temps rise.  

Steve has been getting more spring product into the shop daily. Simms new G3 waders are in as are rods from Orvis and Thomas and Thomas. Steve can also help out with fly selections, rigging and gear choices.  Otter Creek Classic registration is still happening, the weekend of May 13-15 this year.  Feel free to reach out to Steve at the shop or me via dave@mmvt.com with any questions.
