Let it be so that we have finally turned the corner on the Otter. I have had 2 (early) mornings that the Otter was around 67. Just hope that our weather continues to stay cool and please ALWAYS, bring a thermometer to check the temps before you start fishing. The Iso nymphs are all over the place and I have seen a few shucks on the rocks. For all those unfamiliar, the Isonychia, is a drake mayfly, that crawls out of the water to hatch on rocks and streamside vegetation, just like stoneflies. The Iso is a strong swimmer, so this is one of my favorite times to fish large Soft Hackles, and swing every dead drift. The Iso's are big bugs and can bring some of the largest fish to the surface. So it is exciting if the weather and water temps cooperate enough to allow trout anglers to have a shot at presenting big dries to large fish. At times the water can boil with fish pounding the surface and swiping at bugs trying to make it to the rocks or bank. If you also happen to be out there on a cool evening, you might mistake the White fly Hatch for an upstream, upside down blizzard. This hatch can be unbelievable to witness, and will also get some fish up to the top. Combined with few species of Caddis there will be lots of eating fish. Expect the fishing to become increasingly more productive as the summer wears down. This is probably our favorite time of the year to be on the water. Bass and Pike fishing has been great this summer as well. We have definitely seen an influx in peoples interest in fishing for these species and also the quality of fishing this year seems to be better. lots of small pike out there which will certainly be good for the next few years. This year from the drift boat we have landed several very large Smallmouth Bass and several Pike over 30 inches. I did see a landed Pike that was over 40"! Most of this action has come on the top portion of the water column if not off the top. Join us for a Bass & Pike float! Keep an eye on the water temp, and stock up for the next month and a half because its about to get CRAZY out there!
